One of the most important features of android smartphone is video calling. People use it to stay connected with friends, family and for business use. The power of video calling of laptop has come down android devices making smartphones much more powerful. There are lots of free video calling apps available in the market but I am going to share the top 5 apps based on features and reviews.
1. Tango: This is another powerful and widely used free video calling app in android market. It also includes basic features like IM’s, phone calls and video calls. One latest feature that has been included in this app is Video Messaging by which you can record video message and send it to your friends. It already adds up people from you contact list who are using tango. The best part is for the smartphones which don’t have front cam, it used main camera in video calling. So you can be happy that the other person can see you once a while if you want. Registration takes few seconds and no login username/password is required. This is the best video calling app that I have ever came across.

2. Skype – free video calling: The most popular video calling application for PC, Skype launched their android version and it became the most famous video calling app for android too. It’s free like its desktop counterpart. You can do pretty much everything that you do with desktop version of Skype, like Skype to Skype IM, voice call and video call over 3G and Wi-Fi. You can even make low cost international calls and SMS using Skype credits. You can even switch cameras on the call. You can call Skype user across any supported platform like Mac, PC, iPhone or Android.

3. Fring: It supports group video chat and you can add up to 4 people in video chat. This is something unique which is not provided by the above mentioned apps. Fring also uses Dynamic Video Quality (DVQ) to provide the best video and audio capability. You can also use Fring text for IM purpose and Fring to Fring voice calls which is absolutely free. This works across different platforms like iPhone, iPod Touch, Nokia, etc. This app is not very heavy as compared with Skype and Tango.

4. ooVoo Video Call: Likewise Skype it works across iPhone, MAC, PC and Android. You can make free video calls over Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G. It also supports group video chat which can add up to 5 people. It supports lot of tablets and smartphones. People who have used Cyanogen Mod in their rooted smartphones have faced issue in video calling. SO if this doesn’t work for you the way it should, you can always rely on Tango.

5. Qik Video: The features present on Qik that are not available in other video calling apps are recording and sharing videos on social networking sites, live video streaming from mobile to facebook, twitter, etc. , uploading videos on cloud storage (maximum 25 videos), manage videos through Qik desktop app, etc. This is what free version provides you apart from Qik to Qik video calling and IM.  It has a premium version which is pretty expensive and it gives you following features: unlimited uploads, video mail, HD and 3D video recording from selected devices and managing videos from PC. If you want premium features, you can use 30-days trial first.

Apart from the above mentioned video calling apps, you can also use G+ app which stands for Google plus. It has group chat facility names as Google Hangout which lets you connect to 9 friends at a time for video conference.

  1. These are definitely great video chat apps for android. I use skype the most even though I like tango and fring. Here is another app I would like to add to the list. It's called Reflap and it allows you to video call your friends as well as receive calls through your call address.
