The social media giant Facebook continues to try and implement new changes to its site, as it has announced a new design for Facebook Messages. The goal that Facebook probably has in mind is turn Facebook Messages into a full-fledged email client, looking forward to compete with the existing popular email services like Gmail.
The new Facebook Messages redesign has a two-panel layout, and looks very much similar to Apple’s Mail on the iPad. On the left side, you have the smaller panel that lists out your recent messages in your Facebook inbox.
The larger panel is placed on the right-hand side and is used to view conversations exchanged between your friends. Clicking individual messages on the left panel will open the entire conversations that you’ve had with your friends on the right panel. As usual, the reply box is placed at the bottom of the page and includes options for adding attachments that helps “bring conversations to life” by adding multiple photos and emoticons.
The new change also brings in a simplified search tool that is placed right above the left panel, allowing users to find messages or conversations by name or simply a keyword. The navigations have also been improved as the company has added new keyboard commands specifically for Messages.
To access the full list of available shortcuts, press “Alt + Q” on a PC or “Control + Q” on a Mac (Mac users take note: do not press Command-Q by mistake as this will quit your web browser).
Facebook in a post announced the new layout design:
Today we’re introducing improved features and a new look for Facebook Messages. The new side-by-side layout lets you click your most recent message on the left to see the whole conversation on the right. You can also bring conversations to life with multiple photos and emoticons. Now you can search by a sender’s name or keyword from the main messages view. And for easier navigation, we’ve added keyboard commands. To see the full list of available shortcuts, type Alt Q on a PC or Control Q on a Mac.
Facebook says the update will roll out to a small percentage starting today and will be available to all users in the next couple weeks. Back in June, Facebook forcibly switched to its @facebook.com email address to all its users without even notifying users about the change.
