I have been on WhatsApp for over an year, and I didn’t mind paying the $0.99 this year for the same. It has in all terms, revolutionized mobile IMs. But we are here to talk about WeChat. I started using WeChat about two weeks back, and frankly it has taken the place of my top favorite IM app in that short duration. Besides having all the features of WhatsApp, WeChat adds some nifty little perks which make the texting experience even better.
Some great features of WeChat are :
1. Web WeChat
WhatsApping on the go is great, but there is no typing experience better than the old keyboard. WeChat Web client allows you to continue your conversation on your PC whenever you are near one.
2. Video Call
No Arguing there, WhatsApp doesn’t support video calls. I tried the video call feature both on 2G and 3G. 2G wasn’t great but I was impressed by the quality of the call in 3G.
3. Push to Talk
This feature is exiting in WhatsApp as an attachment. But in WeChat, we have a dedicated button on the display which acts as Two way Walkie-Talkie.
4. Facebook Connect
WeChat lets you connect your account with your facebook which enables you to use your account even after changing your sim/number. This is very useful for people using multiple sims.
5. Larger Group Chats
WeChat allows 40 users in a group chats versus 30 in WhatsApp. The more the people, the merrier is the conversation.
There are a plethora of other features like Group Chat QR code, Chat history backups etc.
Its a great app, and the only problem I faced was that my complete network of friends weren’t available. People are moving on it gradually, but once they do, they realize what WhatsApp is lacking.
