Nokia has started launching its new range of Lumia devices with the release of latest version of Windows Phone operating system. They have made devices with focus on imaging capabilities in the past and the Lumia 830 is another device with similar focus. The Lumia 830 sits below the recently launched Lumia 930 and would be a mid-range device. It comes with a ten megapixel primary camera that comes with optical image stabilisation.

The device would be available from October 8 in India at an announced price of Rs 28,799.

Taking a closer look at this device and comparing it with the android counterparts, the pricing appears to be steep. The hardware on this device isn’t exactly what you would expect on a device with this price tag. It packs in some features that try to justify the price tag to some extent but that doesn’t mean it would be able to trump the android rivals on paper. But what it loses in terms of numbers, it makes up with its features and styling. We take a closer look at some of them and also give you detailed breakdown of what runs inside this device.

Design and Built

Nokia has rarely disappointed in this department and even this time, they have got it right. The phone is reasonably slim at 8.7 mm and weighs 150 Gms. It has been made out of plastic but that doesn’t mean the built quality is bad. In fact it feels solidly built and the weight distribution is pretty good. The device looks really nice and has got curved metal edges for a better look. The back cover on this device is removable which has been seen after a long time on a Lumia device of this price bracket.

The power and volume keys sit on right spine of the device. The buttons are responsive and easy to access. It has also got a dedicated camera on the same side of the device. The headphone jack and micro USB port sit on top of the device. The front face is dominated by the 5 inch display. Below that are the three capacitive keys for navigating around the interface.

Display

The Nokia Lumia 830 comes with an IPS LCD display measuring 5 inches. While most android devices in this price bracket like Google Nexus 5 or HTC One E8 offer full HD displays, the Lumia 830 comes with a semi HD display. And just in case you think that it is because of unsupported resolutions, it was a story with previous versions of Windows Phone devices. The 720p resolution gives it a pixel density if just 294 ppi which isn’t exactly very impressive. A slightly smaller display would have made things perfect.

Ignore the numbers and you might not have a lot to complain about. It might not be as crisp as the full HD displays out there in the android world but it is still pretty good. The contrast ratio is decent and the colours are replicated very well. The viewing angles aren’t very impressive so might have trouble sharing screen content with people sitting around you. The display is protected against scratches by Gorilla Glass 3.

Hardware

Now this is where this device disappoints on spec sheet. It runs the familiar Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with a 1.2 GHz quad core processor. This hardware was dated already and they could have used something powerful like Snapdragon 800 for this device. It has got 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. You can use micro SD cards up to 128 GB on the device. It supports almost all the connectivity options any other device of this price bracket would offer. The device also features wireless charging like many other Lumia devices in the past. It gets a 2200 mAh battery and considering the hardware it has got, the battery life would be pretty impressive. Being a Nokia, we are counting on it for impressive battery life.

Camera

The 10 megapixel camera on this device is its highlight. It gets a wide aperture lens along with a large sensor to yield impressive images. It gets Nokia’s PureView tag so you know for sure that it is something impressive. It can also record full HD videos. Optical image stabilisation helps reduce blur and obtain better images even in the dark.

Software

The device runs latest version of Microsoft Windows Phone operating system that is the Windows Phone 8.1. They have added a lot of features in this version of Windows Phone that weren’t present in WP8.

The Windows Phone operating system has reached from a point where it was unusable to a point where a large number of people actually like it for what it is. This version retains the live tile interface as seen on previous versions though with the addition of another column this time. The tiles are a bit different this time as apart from the solid fill colours for the tile, you can use a background for them. With this version, they have finally added an action center which can be accessed the same way you would access the notifications on android devices. You can change what apps can send you notifications. It also gets four shortcut tiles on top which can be changed from the settings. You get a large number of apps that are native to Windows Phone as well as Nokia. Just in case you don’t like some of them, you can choose to get rid of them. Nokia offers some very interesting apps for the Lumia devices through the marketplace. This version of WP operating system also supports gesture typing like android which allows you to type faster while making fewer mistakes.

Verdict

The Nokia Lumia 830 offers a pretty average hardware with an impressive camera but the price tag fails to justify what it offers. On top of that the Windows Phone operating system still needs a lot of work before it can be a major threat to android or iOS.
