Nokia XL is a
colourful Android touchscreen smartphone sold at a budget rate of Rs 15,900. It
is a 5inch phone, and is eye catchy at first sight; the front display is
vibrant and support many entertainment and everyday usage apps like phone,
messaging, internet, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Mix Radio.
Design:
Nokia XL is a
mid-size phone, it measures 141.4x77.7x10.9mm, and is an inch taller than Nokia
X. The phone weighs 190g and is a run over Samsung Galaxy Note 3 that weighs
168g. Nokia XL is bigger than Asha 501 and Lumia 520. Nokia XL is a sturdier
piece compared to X and any other 5 inch phone the bezel dimension is denser.
The phone is efficiently designed, though it weighs 190g, sources could not
feel the bulk weight.
On the front is
flat black glass surrounded by thin black polycarbonate border that adds colour
and vibrancy to the phone. There is one button on the front called capacitive
back button similar t the one used in Asha 50x. There is 2MP front facer camera
on top of the screen along with ambient light sensors and earpiece. The display
is engineered with Glance Screen feature, which keeps the display on in low
power mode state. It displays notifications and clock and maintains a steady
battery output. Just like the borders, the back too has soft polycarbonate
film, which is the USP of Nokia phone. Sources find the polycarbonate material
to be more attractive than plastic used in older phones. Customers can design
the back of their phones with an array of glossy shades like white, black,
yellow, cyan and bright green.
The rear section
has 5MP autofocus camera packed with LED flash, and is an attribute which makes
XL stand out in a crowd of Nokia X+ and X phones. The video capturing capacity
is 480p at 30fps. The loudspeaker is fitted at bottom of the rear, the battery
is under the battery cover, and runs on 2,000mAh capacity. Below the back cover
are card slots on which sits two micro SIM cards and microSD card slot. On the
side is 3.5mm audio jack on top, and microUSB port for charging and data
storage. The power key is within thumb reach, an important point to note is XL
has a double swap feature, which is pretty reliable and accurate.
Display:
The 5 inch Nokia
XL has an IPS LCD touchscreen display and is WVGA resolution capacity is
400x800. Its pixel density output is 187ppi. The display output is phenomenal contributed by ClearBlack polarizing
filter that eliminates reflections and improves screen quality in any
background scenario from moderate to extreme bright surroundings. The glass
quality is firm, but not as powerful as Gorilla glass and is not scratch proof.
The large screen supports many apps that can be easily located, without the
hassle of extensive zooming. The concern here is the readability effect is not
pronounced, it is difficult to read small and medium sized texts. Also bold and
italic fonts are blurred and not very readable. The viewing angles are great,
only with closely related shades, not contrasts.
Sources were satisfied with the
brightness and the impact is great even with minimal setting of 50%. It however
is not too great when the brightness is increased to a considerable level.
Battery:
As mentioned earlier the battery power
is 2,000mAh which enables 11 hours talk time. Nokia XL holds excellent battery
for a dual SIM piece, higher than Desire 600 and 700.
Features:
The operating system (OS) in Nokia XL
is among the best in Android phone industry, sources were happy with OS. Nokia
has tailored the phone with Glance Screen that keeps the display functional in
low power mode. Glance Screen is used in Lumia handset and Symbian and S40
Nokia phones. To unlock the phone users can double tap the screen. If the right
screen is swiped, right apps are revealed, the same procedure follows if left screen
is swiped.
Once swiped to unlock, the display
reveals one of two homescreen, Fastlane and app drawer. On the homescreen is a
list of apps, on top is a search field tab, a horizontal swipe will lead users
to Fastlane homescreen, that keeps track of the apps that have been recently
opened, like web pages, calendar events with birthdays, radio stations,
pictures, recent notes, shared content and social network posts. Users can spot
music player with FM radio as well. Fastlane has a series of tabs like history
list, notification area and app switcher.
Image Organizer:
Nokia XL has a well-organized photo
gallery, and is stacked into a folder, users can organize their photos by place
and time as well. Images are compartmentalized in three by four grid in a vertical
direction. Users can double tap zoon on individual photos; the size of
thumbnails cannot be changed. Consumers can edit pictures in many ways and feel
satisfied with the images, the editing options are light and contrast
adjustment, cropping, flipping and rotating. Images can be used as wallpapers
and can be added in favourite section as well.
Music system:
The music system in Nokia XL is
segmented into tabs; there is a tab button for albums and playlists, artists
and songs. There is an adjustable equalizer with user setting and pre-sets. It
has an amazing Bass boost which increases the noise output of low frequencies
to create a drum kind of music. The 3D effect slider feature is engineered on
headphones only.
Nokia MixRadio has playlists that are
pre-set and new songs can be installed also. The music can be transferred to
internet, there is an offline mode, where the playlist can be loaded using
Wi-Fi than data connection.
Camera:
Nokia XL is tailored with 5MP autofocus
camera with LED flash, and is the most efficient camera from X family. It has a
front facing camera and 2MP shooter. The camera interface has exposure setting,
white balance and flash mode, located right on viewfinder. The menu has
advanced settings like noise reduction, saturation, sharpness and ISO. The
camera supports colour effects, face detection and geo tagging.
